Baby!

 - by Janelle

We’re having a baby!  Here’s an ultrasound picture from 7 weeks.

At this point, it doesn’t look much like a baby yet, but I saw the heart beating!  Matt says he thinks it looks like it might be a Martian, but I think it looks more like a kidney bean. 🙂

Either way, we’re super excited to watch this baby grow, and can’t wait until we can meet him/her.

Feel free to check back and see our progress.

Posting from Android

 - by Matt

I just found the WordPress application for Android and decided to try it out. It seems to work well and there’s an option to upload images along with the post.

I should really get started on the project that I have going on today – fixing the smoke detectors – but for some reason I’ve spent a number of hours last night and this morning trying out new apps on my phone.

In case anyone’s interested, I would recommend the following apps:
– Barcode Scanner + ShopSavvy – neat way to compare prices and read reviews on products, plus ability to scan 2D barcodes to visit URLs or import contact data
– Bible
– ConnectBot – Telnet/SSH client
– Dolphin Browser – like the built-in browser, but uses tabs instead of clunky “windows”
– fring – Skype/VOIP client, also includes video chat!
– Google Sky Map – neat map of planets and stars
– Google Mail – better than the android default Mail program
– Google Maps – includes Navigation, Street View, and ability to share a location via text or email
– Google Voice – many options for fowarding calls and for visual voicemail
– GPS Status – shows positions and signal strengths of local satellites, as well as giving you raw location, speed information, altitude, compass information
– Grocery List – allows you to keep a basic list of things to buy or do
– gStrings – tuner for any musical intrument
– Labyrinth Lite – a realistic digital version of the maze games with a BB that you move around by tilting
– Last.fm – like Pandora but no audio ads
– OI File Manager – let’s you browse your phone’s filesystem
– On Air – makes your phone’s files avialable as a WebDAV share (access via My Network Places -> Add new location), so you don’t need a USB cable or card reader
– PDF Viewer – does local rendering of PDF files
– Puzzle Blox Arcade – Tetris style game where you destroy blocks by matching similar colors, or using bombs
– Screen Suite Lockscreen – allows you to put your name/phone number and 911 on the lock screen, as well as offer a “slide” unlock mechanism.
– Shh! Auto-Silencer – allows you to define time periods where your phone is silent or on vibrate (like work)
– StopWatch – includes lap records and a count-down mode
– Task Panel – allows you to see all running applications and to kill ones that you aren’t using when your phone gets slow
– Volumer++ – kind of clunky volume control that stays in the notification area for easy access, also includes wifi toggle switch
– WordPress

Lord, I’m coming home

 - by Matt

Between changing hotels, doing laundry, taking subways, keeping in contact with family members, and find 3 meals a day, it’s been tough to find time to sleep.  We are trying to do some work while we are here as well, but we all know that we’ll be more productive once we get home.

Our work travel planner has been working diligently with our travel agent to find flights home for us.  So far most of the flights have been on Sunday, or would depart from a far-away European city that we would have to take a train to get to.

Apparently enough people flew out of Heathrow today that there are some seats opening up on a few flights.  We were notified that part of our group now has confirmed tickets for tomorrow (Thursday) to fly out of Heathrow to the US!

I’m praying for good weather and that things at the airport are settled down enough that they work smoothly.  Hopefully I’ll see you all soon!

P.S. In case you’ve heard of the old hymn with the same title as this post, you might find the story of how it was written quite interesting.  (Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with death!)

A glimmer of hope

 - by Matt

The first word of hope since this volcano erupted:  Heathrow is open again.  They landed a flight tonight and more will run tomorrow.  Read more here if you want:

Right now we are booked for a flight on Sunday.  It will takes days (weeks?) for the flights to return to a normal schedule, so we’re praying that our flight runs smoothly (and safely!).

Are we there yet?

 - by Matt

Well, we just got news that out flight tomorrow is cancelled.  This is the second time that we’ve gotten bumped, and it doesn’t appear as if there is any end in sight…  There may be an option of taking a train to Madrid, which is still operating right now.  Longer travel time, but if that means we get home sometime in the foreseeable future, that might be nice.  I’ll keep you all posted as things progress!
